My Veneer Fell Off My Tooth; What Now?

December 13, 2023

Woman has frightened expression

Veneers have allowed millions of people to beautify their smiles after living with extensive cracks, chips, stains, gaps, or even misshapen teeth. While veneers are incredibly durable and lifelike dental appliances, they can fall off sometimes. This is a rare occurrence, but it can be quite frustrating to deal with and requires a dentist’s attention for repairs. Here’s why your veneer might fall off and what you can do to manage the issue until you can see your dentist.

Why Did My Veneer Fall Off?

Veneers can fall off for a variety of reasons. A few of these include:

  • The veneer is due for replacement. While veneers are long-lasting, they will eventually need to be replaced. As time goes on, the cement attaching it to the tooth will weaken, and the veneer can eventually fall off as a result.
  • The veneer wasn’t placed properly. If you just got your veneers and find that they are falling off, it’s probably because they weren’t bonded properly with the teeth. Try seeing a different dentist for repairs.
  • The tooth is decayed. While veneers are immune to tooth decay themselves, they still need strong, healthy teeth to support them. If the tooth hosting a veneer becomes decayed, the veneer may no longer have sufficient mass to remain in its place, causing it to fall off. The tooth will have to be cleared of infection before a new veneer can be placed.
  • Improper use. Using teeth as tools for opening packages or chewing on ice or non-food items can damage natural teeth and veneers alike. These habits can cause veneers to fall off their teeth.

What Should I Do When My Veneer Falls Out?

If your veneer has fallen out, the first thing to do is to locate and secure the veneer if possible. Place it in a clean container to take with you to the dentist’s office and do not attempt to reattach it yourself. Call your dentist’s office to explain the situation and schedule an appointment. You will probably receive instructions for caring for your tooth until then. Avoid chewing with the affected tooth and try using dental wax to cover it if sensitivity becomes a problem.

A dental veneer coming loose from the tooth can be a frustrating or even daunting situation. Knowing what to do when it happens can give you the resources you need to secure a favorable outcome.
