What Does a Tooth Extraction Feel Like?

It’s normal to be a little nervous when you learn you need a tooth extraction, but the truth is that this is a very safe and common procedure. In fact, on any given day in the United States, an estimated 55,000 teeth are extracted by skilled dentists just like yours! If you’re curious about what to expect during this procedure and how to ensure that you have a smooth recovery, keep reading for more information.

What To Expect During a Tooth Extraction

There are two basic types of tooth extractions: surgical and simple. Though the steps for both procedures are similar, your dentist may choose one over the other depending on the location of the tooth that needs to be removed. Here’s what happens during both procedures.

Tooth Numbing

The first step of any tooth extraction treatment is to numb the tooth and its surrounding area, so your procedure is completely painless.

Extraction of the Tooth

Once the area is completely numb, your dentist will extract the tooth from the socket by gently rocking it back and forth to widen the socket and separate it from the ligament. Then, using the forceps, they will grip the tooth and pull it out.

For impacted teeth, your dentist will need to make incisions in your gums to access the tooth before it can be removed. Then they, will use steps similar to the ones above to remove it from the jaw.

Closing the Gap

Once your tooth has been removed your incision must be closed. If there is any loose bone or infected gum tissue, your dentist will clear that away before continuing. Then, they will compress the socket so it can return to its normal size. They may also need to round off any sharp bone edges at this time to ensure proper healing.

Next, your dentist will apply firm pressure to your extraction site using gauze to help reduce bleeding and allow a clot to form. If you’ve had a surgical extraction, your dentist will stitch up the site to prevent infection.

Recovering from Extraction

Recovering from a tooth extraction typically takes several days. Be sure to keep the gauze in your mouth for 30 to 60 minutes after the procedure to help control the bleeding. To reduce swelling and pain, keep an ice pack on your face over the extraction site. Here are some other helpful tips to try so you stay comfortable while you heal:

  • Bite on gauze and change it as needed
  • Rest for at least the first 24 hours
  • Take prescription or OTC pain medicine as directed
  • Do not smoke, vape, or drink from a straw
  • Eat only soft foods for two to three days
  • Avoid touching the extraction site when brushing and flossing your teeth

It is completely normal to experience some degree of pain and swelling after a tooth extraction, however if it gets worse instead of better or if there is any excessive bleeding, a fever, or excessive discharge from the site, contact your dentist as soon as possible.

Remember, tooth extractions happen every day, and while they may cause some discomfort as you heal, following the care instructions provided by your dentist can help make the recovery process easier, faster, and much more comfortable.
